Robotic Thoracic Surgery

One kind of minimally invasive surgery utilized in thoracic operations for some cases of lung cancer is robotic thoracic surgery. It can be used to remove damaged lung tissue and possibly adjacent lymph nodes. It is also known as robotic-assisted thoracic surgery. During robotic surgery, the surgeon operates the instruments on the robotic surgical system while seated at a console adjacent to the patient in the operating room. To get a glimpse of the inside of the chest cavity, a tiny 3D high-definition camera is first inserted via one of the incisions. The other tiny incisions made in between the ribs are then used to insert robotic devices. The doctor's hands at the console have total control over the robotic equipment. Through one of the incisions, the surgeon extracts lung tissue. Without needing to make deeper incisions to open up the chest or spread the ribs, the surgeon can precisely and carefully remove lung tissue thanks to the magnified view and wristed equipment. In addition to lung cancer surgery, the robotic approach can be applied to other kinds of chest treatments including the lungs, esophagus, thymus, and some cardiac procedures.
